Baku White City - 2 years later...


In a ceremony 2 years ago, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev broke ground to lay the foundation for Baku White City - considered to be one of the greatest urban projects of our time.

Today we are witnessing the realization of the famous project , widely represented in the international arena that gained recognition among professionals as one of the most ambitious urban development projects; the winner of  the numerous international competitions, such as MIPIM Asia Awards 2011 in the category "Best Project of the future of Central and Western Asia "and" Best Urban Development project" at Cityscape Global.

Carried out within the Decree of the President Ilham Aliyev on the approval of the "Plan of complex measures to improve the environmental situation in Azerbaijan in 2006-2010"  Baku White City project provides removal of old oil, engineering and other outdated industrial and cleaning up contaminated land - the area that played an important role in the oil industry for more than 100 years, performing activities of processing, storage and transportation of "black gold".

The so called gateway to the project area, Baku White City Office building is under construction on Nobel Avenue, and has become very well known amongst architects worldwide.  The building received international awards at the design stage and has also gained two further awards, for Office Buildings and Office Architecture, at the prestigious international Asia Pacific Property Exhibition and Awards 2013-2014. 

Another active development is the 24 hectares Park District area, located on a hill, crossing Baku White City from east to west and designed to include a series of mid-rise (up to 20 floor) buildings, constructed on a pedestal that will be offered as commercial/retail space.

Located some 25m above sea level, Park District will have a stunning view of the waterfront, boulevard and Flag Square. 

As lead consultant, the world-renowned global engineering and architectural design firm Atkins (UK) performed masterplanning and detailed planning activities for the project along with specialists from Azerbaijan. Fosters and Partners (UK), established by legendary architect Norman Foster and American architectural bureau F+A Architects, with their globally renowned experience in the design of retail projects, were also involved and UN Studio, Structural Engineering Co. Ltd, WSP, Erginolgu & Calishlar и GMG IN/EX.

Baku White City urban development project carried out within the framework of the Decree of Mr. ILHAM ALIYEV, the President of the Azerbaijan Republic entitled “COMPREHENSIVE ACTION PLAN FOR IMPROVING THE ECOLOGICAL CONDITIONS IN THE AZERBAIJAN REPUBLIC DURING 2006 – 2010” has been recognised among professionals as one of the most ambitious urban development projects, which is characterized by its environmental focus, stability and integrity. The project is the winner of the number of international exhibitions such as Cityscape Global 2011 in the "Best Urban Development Project», MIPIM Asia Awards 2011 in the category "Best Project for the Future of Central and West Asia."
